The future of the Ultimate Fighting Championship‘s light heavyweight division will be on the line Saturday when UFC 78: Validation takes place in New Jersey.
In the main event at Newark’s Prudential Center, American “Sugar†Rashad Evans (15-0-1), who won season two of The Ultimate Fighter in the heavyweight division, battles season three light heavyweight winner Michael “The Count†Bisping (15-0) of England.
Bookmaker.com has Evans as the favorite at -305, while Bisping is +245.
In another light heavyweight bout, two of the most aggressive strikers in the game clash when Houston “The Assassin†Alexander (8-1) faces Thiago Silva (11-0).
Alexander has been the breakout performer of 2007, winning his first two UFC bouts against Keith Jardine and Alessio Sakara by knockout in less than two combined minutes. Chute Boxe’s Silva has been just as impressive in stopping James Irvin and Tomasz Drwal in his debut fights in the Octagon.

ALCS Game 6: Cleveland Indians at Boston Red Sox. Shilling goes for the Sox, and is looking to rebound from his poor start earlier in the series. He looked awesome against the Angles, but the Indians seems to have him figured out. Can he take the Sox to a deciding Game 7? Or will the Indians take the series and face off against the streaking Colorado Rockies in the World Series?
UFC 77 – Hostile Territory: Cincinnati Ohio native Jorge Gurgel takes on Alvin Robinson in a featured bout. Gurgel is looking to revenge an earlier defeat at the hands on Robinson. And then there is the main event, featuring Rich Franklin taking on UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. Should be a great evening of Ultimate Fighting!

Tampa Bay @ Detroit and Chicago @ Philadelphia look to be two of the more evenly-matched games on the Week 7 NFL schedule. I’m picking both of the home teams in these two games.

Dutching is a betting method whereby one bets on more than one outcome of a sporting event. Bets are placed on different outcomes and in different amounts in order to ensure a certain profit regardless of which outcome occurs.
Most often applied to horse or dog races, dutching can be applied to soccer matches. You can use it when you think there will not be a tie (betting A and B), or when you think that one team will certainly not lose (in which case you bet that team and the tie).
Here is how I would use dutching to determine if betting on both A and B is a good bet.
Before looking at the odds, estimate the probability that the match will end in a draw; you can use someone else’s expert analysis from the papers or on the web, recent historical stats, the stats of key individual players involved in the match (especially the goal keeper), and other factors that you think are relevant to help you make this estimate.Â
Once you make this estimate — for example, let’s say that you estimate a 20% chance of a draw — then use this free dutching calculator to enter the odds for A and B in the Selection 1 and Selection 2 fields; remove any other values from any other Selection fields. Be sure to use 100 for the Total Staked value to make the next step easier.
Compare the Profit value to your estimate, and if the Profit value is higher than your estimate, then you will want to bet both A and B for the match.Â
If you decide that you want to bet both A and B, change the Total Staked amout to the total amount that you want to bet on the match. Place wagers on A and B as given in the Staked column to the left of A and B, respectively.
Rather than apply this method to a single match, I would apply this method to a whole day’s or week’s worth of matches, and then dutch the game (or games) where the difference between the Profit value and my estimate of a tie was largest.
I encourage you to try this method for fun for a while and see how it works for you. Keep track of your wagers and winnings on paper before making any actual bets.
