Game Rules & Strategy: Baccarat
Object: The objective of the game is to predict whose hand, the Banker's or thePlayer's, will be closer to the value of nine. You can also bet on thepossibility of a tie.

The Deck: This game can be played with one, two, four, six, or eight standard 52-card decks. The value of the cards is as follows:

Card Value
King, Queen Jack, Ten 0
Nine 9
Eight 8
Seven 7
Six 6
Five 5
Four 4
Three 3
Two 2
Ace 1

Overview: After players make bets, two cards are dealt face up to the Banker and the Player. The value of the hand is computed by adding the individual card's values but considering only the "ones" place in the resulting total. For example, if a hand contains a 7 and a 4, the value of the hand is 1, not 11.

The Player and the Banker may or not draw a card, based on the following rules:

  1. If either the player or the banker has a total of an 8 or a 9 they both stand. This rule overrides all other rules.
  2. If the player's total is 5 or less, then the player hits, otherwise the playerstands.
  3. If the player stands, then the banker hits on a total of 5 or less. If theplayer does hit, then the table below describes if the banker hits orstands.

6 6 - 7 0 - 5, 8 - 9

9 Can't draw (see rule 1)

Once cards have been drawn -- if any -- losing bets are collected and winning bets are paid out:

Bet Payout
Banker 1 to 1 minus 5% commission
Player 1 to 1
Tie 8 to 1

Strategy

  • Even with the commission, the Banker bet is the best at the table.
  • The house edge for the Banker bet is smallest at a one-deck game. So, if you're only going to make the Banker bet, then play at a single-deck baccarat table.
  • Ignore the "trending" cards that some players religiously fill out while playing baccarat! Each hand is an independent event and past hands have no impact on the next!!!
